Cape Town 2024: Day 3

Seeing God in the In-Between

Goeie môre Suid Afrika! We’ve had a fantastic trip so far and already have learned and seen so much. I would challenge anyone to view the lofty mountains or the rolling ocean waves and not be in awe of God’s power and creativity. I am reminded of Psalm 33:8-11: Let all the earth fear the Lord;
“Let all the people of the world revere him. For he spoke, and it came to be. He commanded, and it stood firm.The Lord foils the plans of the nations; he thwarts the purposes of the peoples. But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations.”

Today was Sunday, and we attended church at King of Kings along with Austin Keim. The next stop on our list was a township, or informal housing settlement, where a celebration was taking place in honor of Youth Day. But first we had to wait in the church lobby. And wait. And then wait some more.

I don’t have to tell you that waiting is difficult. We’ve built our society around minimizing the time we spend waiting- fast lanes, fast food, and fast shipping all come to mind. As a group we also struggled to have patience. God, however, is infinitely patient. He doesn’t mind waiting and He is present not just in the mountains and valleys but also in the middle. In the space between church and the township God was present. We were able to speak with the church employees, with Austin, and with Ramos. It also gave us a chance to get Livy home since she wasn’t feeling well. We got to go into a local grocery store with Austin and tried South African snack foods, which was so cool. And we did what we do best: we talked and laughed and fellowshipped.

It’s easy to feel God on top of Table Mountain or working with children in a township. It’s harder, but just as rewarding, to find God in the mundane. Some of my favorite memories from our trip have been on the bus or in between events. I’m grateful for the time in limbo, however frustrating it can be, because God challenges us to have patience and wait on His perfect timing.
Thank you for continuing to follow along with our journey! We appreciate all of Brookwood’s support!
