Good morning and happy Youth Day!
Today was a holiday here in South Africa, a day which honors the role of youth in fighting against the injustices and oppression under Apartheid. It remembers the peaceful protest of gathered teens which ended in a massacre on this day 48 years ago. This tragedy, however, is a testament to God’s commitment to justice and his desire to work through each any every one of us, regardless of age.
We started off the day bright and early, headed to hike Lion’s Head. This exciting trail took us on up over 1000 feet in elevation in about 1.5 miles, with some areas feeling more like rock climbing than walking. But what a view! The sun rose as we hiked and we were left in awe of the beauty around us. What struck me the most was the diversity in nature which we got to see. To one side there were huge mountains, to another sparkling beaches and tropical plants, but also a beauty of another kind: a city dazzling in light, waiting to see what the day will bring.
After our hike, we refueled at Truth Coffee and ate some brunch before embarking to once again marvel at God’s creation, visiting the beach to penguin watch! The penguins were absolutely precious, and it was amazing to see close. Next, we traveled to the Cape of Good Hope, the southwestern most part of Africa, where we spotted some ostriches! This place really does have it all.
Today was a day of fellowship, of strengthening our friendships and experiencing God’s creation together. We are so excited to begin working holiday camp with the kids tomorrow! Our hope is to show God’s love to each and every person we interact with and encourage the amazing Living Hope team! Thank you for the continued prayers and well wishes!
