Day 5: Cape Town 2023

27Jun

Hey Blog!

Today, we started our day by waking up at the actual crack of dawn (6:30ish) and ate a yummy hot breakfast prepared by the sweet Team House staff. Larry ensured that we left for Capricorn for our first day of Holiday Club on time (approximately 7 minutes behind our intended time). Upon our arrival in Capricorn, we began by practicing our skit, which definitely needed some practicing, and decorated the room we would be gathered in.

At 9:00, our first group of kids came (3-8 year olds), and they were awesome. We performed our skit about God creating the world, and we killed it. We praised and worshipped with them, split into groups to do crafts, games, and make up a song to today’s memory verse (Genesis 1:1).

At 11:00, our second groups of kids arrived (9-12 year olds), and we essentially did the same thing but with even more energy. We did lots of dancing, and a girl referred to me as “very free.”

Next, we ate lunch and talked to the girls and boys from neighboring townships who were helping with us. We played an intense game of soccer, and Rylen scored a goal/was standing in the right place at the right time when Rafik, the other LSE, kicked it at his foot.

After that, we gathered some teens to come to afternoon Holiday Club for ages 13-18.  With them, we played some games and watched a video from the Alpha Series and had some meaningful discussions.

After cleaning up, we headed home and put on some warm clothes before heading out to watch the breathtaking sunset on the beach. We had a sausage/pasta thing for dinner that was really good and delicious homemade ice cream for dessert. We practiced our skit for tomorrow, and Austin, Kelsey, and new friend Molly came over and shared some really cool insight about the kids and their home lives. We “decompressed” (as Vaughn calls it) to end our awesome day.

After our first day of serving these amazing kids and our LSE’s, we are feeling so thankful for this opportunity.  Our hope is to be the hands and feet of Jesus and create a safe, loving atmosphere that these kids deserve. After one day, our hearts are feeling fuller, and the joy these kids radiate is so contagious. We are so excited and grateful to be able to experience three more days of this and do what the Lord has called us to do.
